There is an important principle in children's room storage design:centered on the child's height and habits, not the adult's aesthetic. When the system is right, tidying up toys can become the child's own responsibility.
Tip 1: Storage tools should be "low, shallow, and clear"
Low:Storage cabinets should not exceed the child's height, with the heaviest toys on the bottom layer so the child can easily reach them;
Shallow:Storage box depth should not exceed 30cm; boxes that are too deep will be turned upside down by children;
Clear:Transparent boxes or picture labels - for children who cannot read, use "LEGO photos" or "building block photos" as labels so they can put things back by looking at the pictures.
Tip 2: A toy "rotation system" - fewer toys actually leads to better focus
Put two-thirds of the toys into storage and leave only one-third outside, rotating every two weeks. With fewer toys, children will play more attentively, the tidying burden will be much smaller, and the "old toys" that come back in rotation will be as attractive as new ones.
Tip 3: Turn tidying into a game and putting things back into instinct
Countdown challenge:"Let's send the building blocks home together in 5 minutes!" Use a timer to create a sense of play;
Toy going home story:Tell the child "the little car needs to go back to the garage to sleep," using personification to give putting things back a sense of ritual;
Praise only specific actions:"You put all the crayons back in the box, amazing," which is more effective than a general "great job."
A reminder for parents: plan first, then add items
Another reason children's rooms become messy again is that items grow too quickly. It is recommended to follow the "one in, one out" principle: before a new toy enters the room, first choose an old toy with the child to give away or store away. If this habit is established from an early age, when the child grows up, their control over possessions will far exceed that of peers.
If the children's room is small and there are too many toys to know where to start, you can also invite a professional organizer to come to your home forparent-child organizing - we will guide the child through organizing together, teaching methods rather than tidying up for them.
